How To Enjoy Winter (When You Hate Winter)
HOW TO ENJOY WINTER— WHEN YOu HATE WINTER.
Coming from a tropical country, I used to have happy thoughts about winter. I saw how beautiful it was in the movies and how people were always happy playing with the snow and building a snowman. However, nobody ever told me about the ugly parts-- the gloomy weather, the longer nights and the whirlwind of emotions it can make you feel. I hated it.
This year marks my fourth winter and here I am; still not a fan of winter but somehow I have learned how to make the most out of it.
I get how tempting it is to just hibernate and miserably wait for this season to end. But let me ask you, do you really want to be sad and down all winter long? Or are you willing to exert a bit more effort and maybe-- just maybe learn how to enjoy it? If you have chosen the latter part, then I’ve got news for you: you can rock winter as much as you rocked summer.
And here's how you can actually enjoy winter-- from a girl who used to hate it so much.
Winter is a time for personal development.
When I told myself I wanted to make the most out of winter, the first thing I did was change my mindset. I started looking at winter as a time for personal development. This means, time to learn something new-- to do the things you always wanted to do but you couldn’t because you were so busy with all the summer festivities.
If you love writing, how about starting a new blog this winter? Or learning a new recipe and cooking it for your friends or family? Or maybe you like music? Maybe you can compose a new song or learn a new instrument? Another thing I would suggest is to make at least one DIY project alone and another one with a friend or a significant other. Trying to learn something you never thought you’d do and you'll be surprised to know how capable you are of making big things!
Trying new things in the comfort of your own home can be a great start to make the most out of winter but don’t forget...
To seize the day... And I mean it, literally.
Whether you like winter or not, we all need sunlight to boost our energy so try to get out and get as much sun as you can. You don’t have to book a special trip somewhere to do that. In fact, simple things like a brisk walk, walking to the grocery store or the coffee shop can make a difference. I understand that the weather isn’t a good motivator and believe me I’ve been there. My husband literally had to force me to go and walk with him to get coffee at Starbucks. Don’t get me wrong, I love brisk walking but when snow is everywhere, it’s a different story! The first few steps were dreadful but eventually, I got to enjoy it. I even started to enjoy walking to the coffee shop alone. I even take a longer route sometimes to get more steps. My secret? Well, Spotify ;) Good music does really help!
Give yourself a well-deserved treat
Of all the things I’ve mentioned and I am about to mention on this blog post, I honestly believe this is what really helped me enjoy the winter season. Everybody needs some ‘me’ time and one thing I would love you to do is to give yourself that well-deserved treat. Our skin gets dull and dry during winter so this may be the time to hoard or even make your own face masks. Buy yourself a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates or macaroons, perhaps a bath bomb and indulge in a warm bath while playing some jazz, blues or French house music. What a great way to enjoy an afternoon or an evening after a long day of work!
Something that I really enjoy doing is putting lavender essential oil in our diffuser and drinking coffee or hot chocolate in our living room, in front of the fireplace while listening to ballads or country music.
If all fails-- I want you to remember this…
Winter might be your least favorite but it’s not going to last forever.
Sure, for now, it’s still too cold... But eventually, it will be bearable... Shortly the days will start to get longer again, the ground that used to be filled with snow will start to melt.. and the next thing you know.. You’re already getting ready for spring.
For all it’s worth, a season is just a season. It should not dictate your emotions. It should not dictate your life.
