I love shopping online. As someone who’s on the heavier side, I find that online stores have more varieties for plus size women than retail stores do. Of course, there are some cons you have to consider. You’ll never know what you’re going to get until you receive the item… which can take up from weeks to even a month… depending on the store’s guidelines and policies. I was also hesitant to shop online at first, but after reading a couple of reviews and blogs, I got convinced to try it and it’s definitely one of the best decisions I made when it comes to improving my style. So if you’re new to online shopping, I understand if you’re a little hesitant as well. But there’s no reason to be scared! It is definitely possible to have a fun experience when shopping online. Here are some of the things I’ve learned to be successful at online shopping:

Check the size guide and the description thoroughly

I’ve said this before and I’m going to say this again. Do check the size guide and the description of each item you’re going to purchase online. This is the most important lesson I’ve learned from shopping online and not doing this can affect your whole online shopping experience in a negative way. I made a mistake of ordering clothes online in my current size without looking on what fabric is used or if it’s stretchable or not. As a result, most of the clothes turned out to be a size to two sizes larger than what I would actually wear.

Think of it as if you’re buying clothes in a retail store. We always know what size we normally fit in but sometimes, we end up buying a size smaller or larger. And it can be of many things. Sometimes, we gain or lose pounds. Sometimes it’s because of the fabric. The only difference is, you really can’t try them on unless you buy it and fit it yourself once it gets delivered. Some online stores intentionally make their clothes a little smaller, some are one size larger. Size small may fit as medium and size medium may fit as small. Before buying clothes online, I suggest you know very well all your sizes to determine which size you need to buy.

Take time in reading customer reviews

It’s also great to read the customer review section to get an idea of what the item will look like in case you buy it from the website. A lot of customers will share their experience on dealing with the company in general and almost all of them will also share whether the item is true to its size and if the item looks the same in the picture. Some customers will even go above and beyond and post a picture of them wearing the item they just purchase.

When I was new to online shopping, I even watched fashion haul vlogs on YouTube. Not all reviews are credible but it will definitely help you in making your decision.

The best time to shop online is from Wednesday to Friday

I haven’t really noticed this first hand because the stores that I’ve seen (Shein, AMI ClubWear and BooHoo) always have sales on their website. However, I’ve seen in one of the articles in Cosmopolitan that Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are the best days to shop as these are the days most online stores update their sales and clearance items on their website.

Sales do not always mean you’re saving money

I think this is more of a general shopping rule than an online shopping rule. Don’t get too tempted to buy sale and clearance items because sometimes, it just makes you spend a little bit more. I also find that some sale items aren’t that much of a money saver and sometimes, your better off shopping on the new arrivals section.

Know the company’s shipping process

It turns me off when companies charge you for the shipping fee for each item. Some online stores sell clothes at a very cheap price but when you go and check out, it turns out that the shipping fee cost more than the items you want to purchase. So if your end goal is to save more money, you’ll actually end up spending more.

My advice is to look for online stores that will charge you a shipping fee that will cover all the items you bought. Some stores like Shein even offers free shipping for purchases over $84 and free express shipping for purchases over $126. Shein also gives you an additional $9 off for orders over $90.

Know the company’s return and refund policies

Online shopping is great and all but it’s also a risk-- it can be hit or miss. There are items that will be delivered to you just as how you would expect it and there are a few that won’t make you happy. That’s why it’s always important to get to know how the online store’s return and refund policies. It will also help if they’ve got the reputation of responding quickly to customer queries. At the end of the day, you need to get what your money’s worth. You have the right to get your money back if by any chance your online experience didn’t turn out to be that good.

Go out there and explore

I think the best way to be successful in online shopping is to simply go out there and explore. You’ve probably heard a lot of horror stories online and while these stories can make you feel hesitant about online shopping, you won’t really know how it truly works unless you try it. There are still a lot of online shops out there that are very true to their words so you just really have to choose which store you should shop at.
